DTF vs HTV: Cost, Detail and Speed Compared
Share
Heat transfer vinyl was how most small shops started. DTF changed the maths, particularly for anything with more than two colours.
The core difference
HTV is coloured vinyl that you cut with a machine and then weed — picking out every unwanted piece by hand. Each colour is a separate layer, cut and pressed separately. DTF is printed in full colour in one pass, with no cutting and no weeding.
Detail and colour
HTV handles bold shapes and text well. It struggles with gradients, photographs and fine detail, because every element must be a cuttable shape. DTF prints gradients, photos and unlimited colours with no extra work — the file is the limit, not the material. Our file prep guide covers how to keep that detail sharp.
Time
This is the big one. A detailed three-colour HTV design can take 20 minutes to weed — per design. The same design as a DTF transfer takes seconds: position, press, peel. If you value your time at all, weeding is usually the most expensive part of HTV.
Feel
Layered HTV builds thickness fast — three colours means three layers of vinyl stacked on the garment. DTF is a single thin layer regardless of how many colours are in the design, so a full-colour DTF print is often thinner than a two-colour HTV one.
Cost
A single-colour HTV name on the back of a jersey is cheap and hard to beat. But cost scales with colours and labour: more colours means more material, more cutting, more weeding. DTF is priced by film area, so a full-colour design costs the same as a one-colour design of the same size. Packed onto a gang sheet, the per-print cost drops further.
Where HTV still wins
- Single-colour numbers and names on team uniforms
- Specialty finishes — glitter, reflective, flock
- One-off items where you already have the vinyl on the shelf
Where DTF wins
- Anything full colour, photographic or gradient
- Multi-colour designs where weeding time adds up
- Mixed fabric types — one method covers cotton, poly and blends
- Repeat orders, where a gang sheet of your bestsellers is far cheaper
